Samples
We accept nasal swabs, hair and blood. We have compared DNA extraction from these three sample types and have good, consistent quality and yield of DNA from nasal swabs. Since this method is also less invasive, we recommend nasal swabs as the preferred method of sample collection.
Nasal Swab
DNA is a relatively stable molecule but will degrade over time unless preserved properly. Nasal swab sampling will provide the best method of DNA collection for producers. The nasal swab sampling kit includes sampling tubes containing lysis buffer and swabs. This sampling method is a preferred and easy way to collect DNA from goats as it has been shown to yield sufficient amounts of high quality DNA. Hair
Hair sampling kits are available upon request through GoatGEN. Sampling kits include a paper envelope and insert in which hair samples are protected. It is extremely important to keep hair samples dry upon collection and shipment. To avoid cross-contamination, it is important to wear clean latex gloves and use clean equipment on every sample. Furthermore, more than one sample should never be placed within the same envelope or bag.
* A sample of 15-20 hairs should be plucked preferably from the chest or rump of the goat where hairs are thick and have large roots. These hairs are to be placed in the provided envelope*

Blood
Whole blood collection is invasive and requires an experienced veterinarian to collect blood. However, if proper collection and preservation measures are taken DNA from blood gives a high amount of quality DNA.
